You make a fan game with copyrighted characters, show it out for free, no profit, what's wrong with that? To us, sharing this with the community is like sharing with friends and family, only on a much bigger scale.

Steal someones car, take the family for a spin, refuel the car, and return it.

Nah, can't see any issues there :P

@DarkRonin That's different. It is one object and can't be copied. Digital content is copied.

Copyright infringement you mean? ;)

What's the definition of copyright infringement?

First result on google.

Copyright infringement is the use of works protected by copyright law without permission, infringingcertain exclusive rights granted to the copyright holder, such as the right to reproduce, distribute, display or perform the protected work, or to make derivative works.

Definition: Distribution means to spread the product throughout the marketplace such that a large number of people can buy it.

What about the numerous fan games that exist on the internet? Mostly sonic games, Tons upon tons of games with ripped content on the play store and other game download sites. All are free.

No it doesn't...

Again, the first result on Google....

Distribution - the action of sharing something out among a number of recipients.

@sprotz VideoGameAttorney in his Ultimate guide to legal needs and prices post on Reddit sums it up quite nicely:

  • No, you can't make a damn fan game. Yes, it's infringing. No, it doesn't matter others do it. O.J. got away with murder, don't try to do it yourself though. I've seen so many developer lives ruined (lost home, wife, kids, etc) all because of a silly fan game. These companies are brutal about protecting their IP. The reason you never hear about it? All settlements come with an NDA that makes it so no one can write or talk about it.

So people made fan games and uploaded it to Google play. The games are still there. Google seems fine with it.

@DarkRonin So you call giving a copy of your game to your brother copyright infringement.

Google doesn't hold the copyright. It isn't their call.

But, if you know better why did you create this thread?
