I took a break from Ciros this week to work on our Role Analysis 2. For this, the programmers were tasked with taking the time to learn a new engine, so I chose Unreal Engine 5. I have worked with this before, but only very lightly. In order to learn the engine I am following Unreal Sensei’s Beginner Tutorial - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-zMkzmduqI

I worked through half of the tutorial so far. This covered the basics of the main windows, materials, lighting, and landscaping.

Sensei’s materials section had me creating new materials using some of Unreal’s starter content as well as from scratch and a provided model and texture. I learned how to make a master material as well as material instances. Much of the actual information about materials I could understand from Unity but it was helpful to see how Unreal utilizes it.

The lighting stuff will not be something I work with often but it was very helpful to learn about a very complex and important part of Unreal’s 3D VFX system. Sensei demonstrated most of this through a provided started project.

I have only partially worked on the landscaping portion of the tutorial, but I did work through the introduction. This includes how to create a landscape and how to use brushes. I worked through until he introduced Unreals asset store for downloading Megascans.
