Getting into Gameplay Programming

Does anyone have any general advice or guidance for an aspiring gameplay programmer with an existing academic background in computer science and so far no professional experience? I’m at least vaguely aware of what that kind of position calls for (general programming knowledge, how to take a gameplay mechanic and see it through from idea to finished feature, maybe some familiarity with a game engine or two) but I would still like some direction on what exact technical skills would be good to have or are in demand in today’s market. I’m also feeling rather lost on how to build an appropriate portfolio (and what kind of projects I should even make for it.)
