Limiting the map in worldwide wargame?

Hi

Designing a scifi wargame set on earth in the near future. For reasons of scale the game-world may be limited to some part, probably Europe.

However is this strange? It's a world war kind of scenario after some disaster where new empires fight and conquer regions. Using the entire globe makes regions too many or too large so im not sure that works well. But why would you take regions from europe to the start of the middle east, but not be allowed to "continue"? Why is the map ending there? This works fine in ancient or medieval scenarios but is a little strange in a modern setting...

You need some artificial reason why it is impassable. What is your tech level? Maybe everything out of your map is a nuclear wasteland. Maybe global warming messed up the weather, so you have huge storms and endless deserts everywhere outside of your map. This one can be used to block land, air and sea routes at the same time. Maybe there is just nothing useful outside of your map: again, lifeless desert, ozone holes, rising sea levels that just happen to block you off in all the right places... If your tech level is low enough, you can adapt reasons from ancient or medieval scenarios, such as limited supplies, not enough people to spread through the map, or something like that. You can also go for political reasons if that is viable: maybe the entire edge of the map belongs to an empire that is your ally, or a lot stronger than you, so you don't even want to go there.

Players understand that game maps have to be limited, so any reason you invent will probably be accepted, even if it doesn't make perfect sense.

Good points. The tech level is high (higher than we have today) so that limits the realistic barriers a little bit, and you are a supreme leader so allies working as borders isnt very likely either.

I might have to make larger regions work with the gameplay. But it seems strange to control infrastrure ("buildings" such as hospitals in different levels) in regions as large as western europe etc (similar amount of regions in the world as the classical risk map). Maybe I can theme them very broadly like "healthcare infrastructure II" instead of "large hospitals".
