Presentation Techniques

What are some of the best ways to actually sell your prototype or a Proof of Concept to a company? Would a power point presentation be best? Or maybe a video like a teaser trailer to go along with a power point presentation? I'm just trying to get some ideas of how to best go about this.

Are you intending to sell the concept of a game to an existing development studio? Or are you trying to start your own development studio and pitching to a publisher or investor? Are you attempting to sell an idea, technical demo, gameplay demo, or a functioning prototype? Do you have a game design document or business plan of some kind?

Game development companies do not, generally speaking, buy prototypes or proofs of concept. They implement their own in-house ideas or they do work for hire for external publishers or clients.

Publishers may occasionally accept pitches like this. I only have experience of very large projects being pitched to publishers and in that case it's less about prototypes and presentations and more about having a track record of delivery combined with a precise resource plan.

Smaller publishers might accept more informal submissions, but - as with any source of funding or investment - there is no 'one size fits all' approach, so you must do your research on the specific company and see what sort of approach they favour. It never hurts to have a prototype and presentation ready to go, providing you focus on answering their questions, which usually look like:

  • How much is this going to cost us, and what exactly does that pay for? What's the team size? What's the project duration?
  • How can you demonstrate that you can deliver the final product? How experienced are the team? What are the risks?
  • Who is the market for the product and how will it be monetised? How is it positioned relative to competing products? Is there a unique selling point?

Correct. I wrote a couple of articles on this years ago. See

and
