What demo for finding a job

Hello,

I have been programming games for many years now. I wish to find a job in the games industry.

I think I can write code up to standards but how do I prove this?

What demo should I write? It should be complex enough to convince a potential employer but small enough to be a one-man project.

I'd like to develop a technical specialisation. I'd like to dive into graphics or other engine specialisations. Is there any particular specialisation that is in higher demand than others?

What should I do? I was thinking of trying a mega-texture or maybe a 3d collision detection library featuring some trees.
Or is the demo not all that important?

Any advice?

Cheers,

I can answer only one of your questions with some certainty: Demo is everything.
If you've been programming games for years use one feature you completed in one of this games that you are proud of.

Saying "I did this and that exactly in this and that game" should be good.
If your doing a demo, no matter how simple a game is make it complete. Most people will make an exe that jumps right into a game, thats fine but if you can make a title screen/pause screen/options etc it looks far nicer even if the game itself is pretty basic.

Doesn't have to be just one demo either but present them in such a way that you get to the point really fast (brief video and then somehting else to follow up - like execuably itself).
