Hey, visited the web site and checked out DXEncore... It all looks interesting, but why does the game need a Pentium 90 minimum if it''s a simple break-out clone??

Hello, Anonymous Poster, my name is Keith aka Uhfgood and
not related to titancoders in any way… but here are my
thoughts…

If you know anything about games programming in Windows you would know that using high performance counters is only allowed on the pentium and higher, cuz only pentium and higher has the high performance timers… Another reason is if it''s in any higher resolution than 320x200 it''s going to take more memory to move it, also if the bit depth is higher it will be slower… and finally there''s collision detection, on a simple breakout game you have to account for all sides of every block, even if there''s optimizations… so I think a pentium 90 is very reasonable…

Okay now my thoughts on titan coders… You guys have a promising site… And your game sounds kind of interesting
but you need screenshots (or even concept screen shots if no actual ones are available), and you shouldn''t be posting an
announcement unless you plan to have some screenshots, and/or
plan to allow us to download it… (and trust me, you want people
to download early test alphas so we can test it and give you feeback)…

Speaking of Arkanoid...I released a 3D version of Arkanoid called Trixoid almost 3 months ago.

You are all welcome to give it a spin at http://www.trixoft.com/trixoid/

Uhfgood, are you a fan of Willow? Just wondering. Anyway, I''m a bit familiar with collision detection in a breakout game. Add a 3rd dimension and you just got yourself a whole new set of faces to collide into. With certain optimizations, every face does not have to be accounted for per ball (not directly accounted for at least). Actually the way I did it, only the face that is hit is accounted for.

The lowest I ever tested Trixoid on was a P166 and it ran fine. If anyone likes to try on a slower system, let me know how it runs.

The site has screenshots to look at and the full version to download.

Well of course you could play it on a Pentium 75 but a P90 is recommended.

There will be screenshoots and more.. didn''t have time to put that stuff up.

Collision detection in a breakout game is minimal, this will barely affect the speed. I rember writing a version on the Spectrum in BASIC.

You don''t have to check every block, only the ones that exist in the same space as the ball. Blocks are static so this is simple. The hardest part is deciding at exactly what point the collision is so you can do decent physics, but this is often faked.

Pentium is a reasonable minimum because of all the extra features that the Pentium came along with.
HAHA, Trixter! you''re one of the very few that has figured out where my nick comes from :-), of course I''m a fan of Willow
unfortunately i misspelled "Ufgood" but i''ve stuck with Uhfgood ever since :-)
