Well, except for some test equipment in Japan and a weather radar in Arkansas, Y2K went off without a hitch. Society didn't collapse, and I didn't get a chance to trade my can of Spam and bottle of water for John Romero's Ferrari.

Monday should be interesting, as we'll get to listen to all the talk-radio pundits out there insist that it wasn't them who were doing all the fearmongering, it was those other guys. I think I might write up a few emails to certain authors (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17) to ask them if they've at least got enough of a conscience to offer a refund for their books.



You know, it's really sad. Remember about a year ago when that Korean cult in a Dallas suburb thought that the world was gonna end and God was gonna appear on channel 18? All the national news media showed up to rub their noses in their failed prophesy. That's not gonna happen in this case, even though the doomsaying was a million times bigger and sillier.

Wanna know why? It's because a lot of large established religions and some respected names bought into it. It's OK to laugh at a little cult of 20 people who make a silly prediction, but if you get a bunch of high-profile religious leaders on the bandwagon all spouting quotes from Ed Yourdon, then you've suddenly got no right to make them feel justifiably stupid.

The old adage "the bigger they are, the harder they fall" doesn't seem to apply anymore. Nowadays, it seems to be "the bigger they are, the more plausible their denial".
